An early-is (1956) recording before truly assessing himself, this is still a great collection of tunes covering both bluesy ballads and hard bop. It includes Wayout favorite Mal Waldron (his tune Abstraction here is a highlight), as well as Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley, Art Taylor, and Doug Watkins. An excellent intro to the great tenor that would go on to be one of the more recognizable in history.
